The Intermission Event (a subsidiary of SONSON) is a creative based collective experience focused on increasing the visibility and economic growth of African American creatives. The Intermission Event pays homage to the Black Renaissance and the sophisticated 20th century cosmopolitan experience. With a focus on art, fashion, and music the social events takes you down memory lane by creating an ambiance reminiscent of the speakeasy.
According to the U.S. Black Chamber of Commerce, “African-American businesses have grown at an exponential rate in the 21st century.” The recent U.S. Census survey presented that there are nearly 2.6 million African-American-owned businesses in the U.S., yet why are many of these businesses failing? Two key points--Lack exposure and funding. Whether one is an artist or in tech, business owner are creating products and services, yet do not receive the adequate support to grow.
Tech statistics: FUNDING
Less than 1% of black founders receive funding, leaving many black-owned businesses to be operated by one person, limiting their ability to hire other employees in order to grow and build their businesses.
Art world statistics: EXPOSURE
In 2015 the Mellon Foundation conducted a study revealing the uncomfortable lack of diversity in American Museums. In addition according to research from Artnet , the total combined auction value of work by other African American artists is $460.8 million—just 0.26 percent of the global auction market.
Similar to the Black Renaissance, the event celebrates creatives who are passionate about their talents, have made differences in their community, and who have contributed by enriching the lives of others through their craft. The Intermission Event is adding itself to the nationwide ecosystem of accelerators who are strengthening black business ownership. With the countless platforms, programs, initiatives and conferences in place to support such exponential growth, The Intermission Event not only celebrates creatives, but our strategy is to allow creatives to collaborate by curating events that showcase their work and talents from inception to execution further generating economic growth.
